Political Musings

Here we go, another election. Right now the NDP are on the surge, which I find amazing, as do a lot of people. I see Jack Layton everywhere on the internet these days, "You have a choice, Vote for leadership you can trust!"

The slogan is surprisingly effective, considering that the NDP DO NOT have a good track record governing anything. It's no coincidence that the federal party that started in my province has been permanently kicked out of it. Ontario also remembers the fiasco known as Bob Rae, it's been I don't know how many years and they are still recovering from it.

Now I know that no party is openly trying to destroy Canada, except for the Bloc, but they don't count. I do not agree with the NDP policy of high taxes and huge spending to get what we want RIGHT NOW, I'm more in line with the "low taxes, pay off debt, wait this out, and we will have a very good future," mentality.

Anyway, I find it interesting that the NDP managed to not only get the Liberal and Bloc votes, but also the dissident vote! The dissident vote are from the people who don't care, who want to mess things up, who want to fight against the man. Layton has set himself up as the natural anti-Harper and it's working for him nicely. He wants to bring change, BIG CHANGE, quickly.

My musing in all this is whether or not the NDP are surging because they have a solid platform that people understand and like or if it's just popularity or a reaction against the way things are. I'm not going to lie, his promise about more doctors now and family doctors for every citizen would be really nice... I'm just not looking forward to 14% taxes and sky-rocketing energy prices.

The way it stands, it look's like the Conservatives will get another minority and Jack will become the official opposition. It has me kind of down, I like Harper and I find myself naturally in line with the Conservative position on things. I would like to hope that the political situation isn't dictated by fickle popularity and the demand for immediate gratification, but I am not convinced.
